Minister for the Environment, Eamon Conway Managing Director climote and Neil Bolton Property Services Director Clúid

Minister Alan Kelly T.D., Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government has formally launched the national roll out of the Smart Technology Energy Saving Scheme. The national energy saving scheme will see 10,000 homes across Ireland fitted with a climote remote control heating system to enable families take full control of the energy used in their homes.

Delivered by home technology company climote, and funded by Electric Ireland, the Smart Technology Energy Saving Scheme is a groundbreaking initiative which sees the collaboration of the public and private sectors in delivering an innovative energy efficient scheme based on the use of smart technology.

climote beat off competition from a number of other international connected home technology companies to secure the deal which will be run in partnership with Ireland’s largest energy supplier Electric Ireland. The scheme will see 10,000 homes fitted with a climote hub over the next twelve months.

At no cost to the exchequer or individual local authorities, 10,000 local authority and housing association homes will be fitted with a climote which will allow homeowners to control their heating timings and temperature via a smartphone, text message or online. This type of life changing technology has been proven to reduce energy consumption by an average of up to 20% every year.

Eamon Conway, Managing Director of climote said, “climote is delighted to announce the national roll out of this ground-breaking energy saving scheme in partnership with Electric Ireland, which will see 10,000 homes across Ireland fitted with climote’s remote control heating system. Working in partnership with Electric Ireland and the various housing agencies and local authorities allow climote’s smart technology enable homeowners to control their heating timings and temperature via their smartphone, text message or online. The real benefit for consumers and the Government is that the entire scheme is funded by industry.”

“The roll out of the national energy saving scheme will be carried out by the nationwide team of approved climote installers who will install the 10,000 climote hubs in local authority and housing association homes over the next 12 months. We have targeted local authority houses and housing associations so families can benefit from climote’s energy saving technology” continued Eamon Conway, Managing Director of climote.

Speaking on the Smart Technology Energy Saving Scheme roll out, Paul Stapleton, General Manager at Electric Ireland said, “At Electric Ireland we are all about Smarter Living, simple ideas that we believe will make our customers lives better. We have worked with climote for a number of years and have received really positive feedback from our customers in terms of the level of control it offers them every day. climote is one of the range of smarter technologies that Electric Ireland is introducing to its 1.3 million customers around Ireland and we are delighted to be part of the roll out of this scheme.”

The Smart Technology Energy Saving Scheme was launched by Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly T.D. in the home of one of the early recipients Trish Foran in Ballygraigue Estate, Nenagh, Co Tipperary. Minister Kelly was joined by representatives from climote, Electric Ireland and Cluid Housing, the largest housing association in Ireland.

One of the first to get involved in the scheme was Cluid Housing and it is expected that thousands of families in every corner of Ireland will benefit from this free scheme. Brendan Cunningham, Technical Manager for Clúid Housing said, “climote will offer greater control of the heating systems to our tenants, through both mobile and digital access. The controls are extremely easy to use, thus encouraging people to adjust the heating without the fear of being overcome with technology. This has proven to reduce energy use within the home as it is only used when needed, hence reducing the overall cost to the tenant and giving them an affordable and sustainable place to live.”

A number of Local Authorities and housing associations including Laois County Council, Louth County Council, Kerry County Council, Mayo County Council and Cluid Housing, have already agreed to participate in this free scheme and have their housing stock fitted with a climote as part of this Energy Saving Scheme.

climote is the brainchild of ex-Honeywell executive Eamon Conway and home technology innovator Derek Roddy, who provide a wealth of knowledge and experience in the smart heating space. The duo have created a company focused on innovation in the areas of energy and home technology. The climote device enables users to control their home heating and adjust the temperature from anywhere in the world, using smart technology.

This national scheme of 10,000 homes further enhances climote’s reputation as a leader in the home technology and energy sector across Ireland and the UK. The fast growing company has already seen energy sector leaders such as John Mullins and Ian Marchant, ex CEO’s of Bord Gáis and SSE respectively, join the advisory board and invest in climote, while the Dundalk headquartered firm won a global tender to offer their remote control heating system to Scottish Power’s 5.6m customers throughout the UK.

Oliver Tully the new heating system in her home." />

2,100 Louth County Council residents have seen the installation of the climote remote control heating system in their homes which allows users to remotely control their home heating and adjust the temperature from anywhere using smart technology, allowing families ensure that the heating is only on when they require it. The local authority has recently completed a major Energy Pilot Project with upgrades to 2,100 homes across the county, including, Drogheda, Dundalk and Mid-Louth.
Termonfeckin resident Claire Duffy is high in her praise of the system and she welcomed outgoing Cathaoirleach, Cllr Oliver Tully into her home recently to let him see firsthand the benefits of the new climote installations.

“climote is so simple to use. Previously we had a manual thermostat with just an on/off button. Now with climote we have much more freedom to control our heating system remotely via the smartphone app.”

“We’ve a new baby and my husband and I really notice the increased comfort and convenience of being able to boost the heating on the way home, or if we need to pop the heat on when getting up for a night feed. The great thing is the convenience and knowing that we are saving energy costs. With climote, I know exactly when and for how long the home heating or hot water will be on for.”

Councillor Tully said “Energy efficiency is a key priority for Louth County Council and I salute the great work that has been carried out all over the county. Louth County Council has been working with climote – itself one of Louth’s modern day success stories – on this project since 2013 and it’s great to see people being able to take control of their home heating systems, with simple and easy to use heating controls. As part of this work, Louth County Council has been able to reduce energy costs for homeowners as well as improve the BER ratings of the Council’s housing stock.”

Louth County Council’s project partners on the innovative scheme included Electric Ireland, Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), Kingspan and climote.

Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Alex White T.D. attended the completion ceremony of the Louth Energy Pilot Project in the Louth County Council offices in Dundalk. This project saw the energy upgrade of 2,100 local authority homes throughout Louth. The works were completed as part of the Better Energy Communities 2014 programme, part-funded by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI).

The ‘Louth Energy Pilot Project’ has been described as the largest social housing “Energy Efficiency Improvement Scheme” of its type to take place in Europe this year and according to Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council Cllr. Peter Savage, “We are proud that Louth has led the way in regards to the size of this energy efficiency project. This project saw the energy efficiency upgrade to 2,100 local authority homes throughout our county. These energy upgrades will facilitate the reduction of their home energy bills while also increasing comfort levels for individuals and families.”

“Technology is changing all our lives and this project carried out by Louth County Council is an example of the type of technology that is life changing for homeowners, who are now able with “climote” to easily control their heating timings and temperature via a smartphone, text message or online which is increasing energy efficiency and reducing wastage. The upgrading of local authority residents heating systems, has delivered tangible results with Louth County Council reducing energy costs for homeowners as well as improving the Building Energy Ratings of the Council’s housing stock. Ultimately it is families who have really benefitted from the introduction of this scheme”, said Cllr. Peter Savage.

Speaking at the event in Dundalk Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Alex White T.D. said “Ireland’s commitment to 2020 energy efficiency, renewable energy and greenhouse gas reduction targets – and our longer-term goal of deep decarbonisation by 2050 – will have a positive impact in the market for sustainable energy technologies and services, like climote. But what I am really excited to see, in this project, is the tangible connection between energy policy and real improvements in the quality of life for citizens. It also shows the potential for local authorities when it comes to achieving our National Energy Policy objectives. This will inform the Public Sector Energy Efficiency Action Plan, which I will be publishing in the autumn. I want to acknowledge the important contribution made by the Energy Efficiency Fund in providing the resources that have enabled this initiative to happen. The successful delivery of projects like this demonstrates a new approach to energy efficiency funding in the public sector.”

David Hourihane, Managing Director of SDCL Ireland, the investment manager of the IEEF said “This is a great example of why the fund was created. It demonstrates that energy efficiency investments can deliver stable returns for investors along with environmental benefits, through structuring projects that drive energy demand reduction within building infrastructure. We have a strong pipeline of opportunities that will come to fruition in the coming months across a number of key sectors, and expect the fund to be fully committed within our investment period over the next 2 years.”

“Officials and engineers from Louth County Council along with our project partners Electric Ireland, SEAI, Climote and Kingspan have worked tirelessly to bring this project to fruition and complete a scheme, which began with a trial of the climote remote control home heating system in 40 homes in Cooley Park, Dundalk in October 2013. Since then we have seen 2,000 homes from the Cooley Peninsula down to Drogheda upgraded with a climote remote control heating systems and a further 100 homes receiving a full energy upgrade including insulation from Kingspan”, said Cllr. Peter Savage.

Declan Meally, Head of Department in SEAI said: “The project in Louth is just one of many that have grown from innovative partnerships that have evolved in the region. The benefit of a Local Authority and business working together to assist new local enterprises demonstrates the real value of partnership and is another way of delivering local jobs. The other benefit is to the homeowners who are struggling to pay energy bills and who now have the ability to actively manage their energy use.

The uniqueness of this scheme is highlighted in the collaborative approach undertaken to fund the energy improvement works with financial and technical guidance provided by Electric Ireland, who as the major co-funder of the project has been involved in energy efficiency improvement works undertaken in Dundalk over the last few years, including €3m spent on the Cox’s Demesne Regeneration Scheme. Paul Stapleton, General manager, Electric Ireland said “being a major energy provider in the country it is important as an organisation that we contribute to the energy saving of our end user, in this case local authority residents who are experiencing fuel poverty. The funding and technical support from Electric Ireland allows projects of this size to be successfully completed.

“The scheme has proved to be extremely successful for the Council, our project partners and most importantly the residents. We all have a responsibility to make this country more sustainable in terms its energy consumption and Louth County Council is playing its part in implementing schemes like this one which are helping to radically reduce energy intensity and usage. Louth County Council is exceptionally proud of our work on this scheme and we believe that along with our project partners, we have made energy efficiency a key priority and are a leading example for other local authorities in Ireland”, concluded Louth County Council Cathaoirleach Cllr. Peter Savage.

It is expected that later in the year that many other local authorities and social housing agencies throughout Ireland will now seek to replicate the project carried out in Louth with climote and other project partners.

Ex- CEOs of Bord Gáis and SSE announced as investors in leading home technology company

climote, the leading home technology company which was recently described as the European competitor of Nest, has announced that both John Mullins and Ian Marchant, ex CEO’s of Bord Gáis and SSE respectively, have invested in the award winning home technology company. The two giants of the energy sector in Ireland and the United Kingdom have also been appointed to the advisory board of climote, which was named as a National Champion in the European Business Awards in early September.

climote’s recently announced contract with ScottishPower has seen the home technology company going from strength to strength, as it builds upon the company’s existing partnerships with Electric Ireland (the retail arm of ESB) and Power NI. The partnership with ScottishPower, which climote won after a global tender of home technology companies, will see climote’s patented smart thermostat technology offered to the Scottish energy giant’s 5.6 million customers in the United Kingdom.

The news that two of the most influential and well regarded people in the energy business have backed climote will further boost the Dundalk headquartered company’s credentials as a leader in the connected home space. Collectively over the past ten years, John Mullins and Ian Marchant were responsible for providing energy to eleven million out of the twenty nine million homes in Ireland and the United Kingdom and were responsible for a combined annual turnover exceeding €30bn.

One of the most experienced leaders and innovators in the Irish energy sector, John Mullins has over 25 years’ experience across all areas of the energy business. During his time as Chief Executive, Bord Gáis established a significant electricity business, renewable and conventional generation assets. John Mullins commented, “I am absolutely delighted to be supporting the climote team, and I look forward to working on growing climote’s market share, entering new markets and rolling out new and exciting products across different markets. The technology behind the climote HUB, which allows users to control their home heating from anywhere, via one touch programming is beautifully simple and extremely reliable. The deal with ScottishPower, which climote won after a global tender of home technology companies is proof for me that climote can take on the biggest players in the industry and succeed. The focus by climote on a utility partnership strategy is now evident with these strong partnerships.”

“I have been using climote’s technology in my own home for many years now, so to be in a position where I will be part of the team driving climote forward is very exciting. Within the next few years, every home throughout Europe will be able to remotely manage their energy use and climote is well positioned to play a leading role in this industry-wide change.” continued Mullins.

Ian Marchant, who is also joining the advisory board as well as investing in climote, has over 20 years’ experience in the energy sector, including a decade at the helm of SSE, the UK’s second largest energy company. Ian Marchant’s vast knowledge will be an incredible asset for the fast growing home technology company.

The rapidly growing climote is the brainchild of ex-Honeywell executive Eamon Conway and connected homes innovator Derek Roddy, who provide a wealth of knowledge and experience in the smart heating space. The duo have created a patented product which enables users to control their home heating and adjust the temperature from anywhere in the world, using smart technology.

Eamon Conway, Managing Director of climote, commented on the announcement, “Following on from our recent ScottishPower announcement, we are extremely pleased to welcome both Ian Marchant and John Mullins on to climote’s advisory board. Both are renowned in the energy space and their acknowledgement and investment in the company is a hallmark for the product itself, as well as validation of our wider utility partnership strategy that focuses on partnering with utility companies to bring our technology to their customers. We look forward to working with Ian and John and hope it will be a long and fruitful partnership
